Little boys and fake cake

2011
05.17

Little boys are really something else.  Mine is no different.  He likes keeping bugs as pets, crazy dancing, anything with a motor and so on.  For the wedding show last week I made a bunch of dummy cakes, which are styrofoam covered in royal icing.  Every time he saw me working on the cakes he would say, “Yummmmm, cake”.  As the son of a pastry chef he is kind of a cake fan.

On the day before the show the cakes were still firming up in my office.  I didn’t really think much of it.  My son came up to me and said, “Cake-delicious”.  I went into my office only to find a big bite taken out of one of my cakes.  Goes to show that even styrofoam does not keep my son from enjoying a bite of cake!

Need gluten-free breads and goodies?  Come see us, Good Gluten Free Foods at the new Quarry Farmers and Ranchers Market in the Quarry shopping center by Whole Foods on Sundays from 8a-12p.  This week-end is the soft opening and the big grand opening will be the first week-end in June.  The market is all about the best food that South Texas has to offer.  There will be natural meats, lots of farm fresh veggies, including the hydroponic veg from Markley Family Farms, the famous Cowgirl Granola (yes, she has GF granola), as well a hand-made cheese from Humble House Foods, lots more and of course, us.

So bring your own re-usuable bags and join us at the market for some good food buying, good music and starting in June, good educational stuff such as chef demos, composting/gardening demos and much more.

See you at the market!

Welcome baby and back into the swing

Almost 6 weeks ago, our new daughter Nicole was born weighing in at 8 pounds, 5 ounces and stretching out to 20.5 inches in length.  Now 6 weeks later, she is looking pretty huge, doing all sorts of age appropriate baby tricks and eating like a fiend.

Don’t be fooled, although I haven’t blogged for all these weeks, I haven’t been just sitting around.  I’ve had visitors, wrangled my other three kids, participated in a cooking contest, did some farmers markets, made a lot of birthday cakes, pitched my business to some new opportunities, and joined a new farmers market that starts this week-end!

So stay tuned because I’m gearing up with new recipes for Spring as the local veggies start to come in!

Boy or Girl?

It’s time to get some opinions in from the peanut gallery.  I say girl, husband says boy.  Daughters say boy because they want another one!  Last pregnancy the lovely ladies at my local Mexican restaurant all said boy, and they were right!  We’ll find out for sure in 1 1/2 weeks, but just for curiosities sake….what do you think?

Better late than never and better gluten-free of course!

Lent is late this year.  It’s still coming, but much later than I remember.  Tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, Faschnacht Day or many other names world wide.  And besides all those other names and goodies often associated with the day…the Tuesday before Lent is known simply as Pancake Day.  The concept is simple.  Pancakes contain sugar, fat and eggs, all rich items usually given up for the Lenten period.  In the UK, Pancake Day even means holding pancake races that date back to folklore of 1445 when a housewife, forgetting the time, was making pancakes when the bells rang for church.  Racing out of the house to make it to church on time, she forgot to put the frying pan down containing her currently cooking pancake!  Races that involve flipping pancakes while running are still held today.

So, I’m just reminding you about my pancake recipe that I posted here on my blog about a million years ago (sometime last year).  Get out your frying pan or griddle and your butters and syrups and get ready to indulge in Pancake Day.  If you have any left, cook them, and throw them in a bag in the fridge or freezer for later use.  Just mircowave for a few seconds and voila, pancakes.  Enjoy!
